The mechanisms of Caylus 1303 have been streamlined and modernized for an intense and shorter game. Don't be fooled, though, as the game has kept both its depth and ease of play while a lot of new features have been added: Variability of the starting position for a virtual infinity of possibilities. Classification The general theme and mechanics of Caylus Magna Carta are similar to the Caylus board game. However, there is no board or score track and the tactical nuts and bolts of the game are somewhat different. In terms of components, the game consists of cards, money, worker pawns, resource markers, the provost, and castle building stones.

1289. To strengthen the borders of the Kingdom of France, King Philip the Fair decided to have a new castle built. For the time being, Caylus is but a humble village, but soon, workers and craftsmen will be flocking by the cartload, attracted by the great prospects. Around the building site, a city is slowly rising up.
When the original Caylus was released back in 2005, it quickly became a classic, well-known for being one of the first games that featured the worker placement mechanism. This new version released by Space Cowboys a couple of years ago, comes with new artwork by the talented Andrew Bosley, and is more streamlined, as they left out the favor tracks and added characters with special abilities.
After about 10 plays, Caylus 1303 has become my favorite worker placement game. It's so simple to teach, yet there is so much depth. The first game I played I thought was very good, but nothing super special. Upon subsequent plays though, the strategies and meaningful choices you have

This feels very Caylus-y, and I mentioned so in my review. There is a dual card draft, which offers some variability, but most of the action is like Caylus and there is essentially very little luck.
